It’s January 29th as I write this and I know that many people are reviewing their New Years Resolutions! Are you one of them? If so, perhaps Dr. Wayne Dyers advice below can help you put it into perspective.

Resolve to Get Real
by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

Forget about those New Year’s resolutions in which you decide on the first day of January how you will be conducting your life in September, some nine months later. Here’s why: any resolution that involves you making decisions about long-range upcoming behavior reinforces the self-defeating notion of living in the future rather than in the present moment. In fact, you can go about resolving until the cows come home, and you still have to live your life just like everyone else on this planet—ONE DAY AT A TIME. The important questions to be asking yourself are “How am I going to use my present moments this year?” and “Will I waste them in reviewing to myself how I used to behave, or how I would like to behave in the future, rather than resolving to live each day to the fullest?”

What you can do is set up day-to-day goals for yourself, and then resolve to begin living with present moment awareness for the rest of your life. For example, instead of deciding you are going to give up sugar for a year, resolve to go one day without eating sugar. Anyone can do virtually anything if it is for only one day. When you go for one whole day without eating sugar (or any other new behavior), you are a totally different person at the end of that day. Learn to let that totally different person decide on the second day whether he or she wants to do it again on this new day, rather than letting the same old person decide that it is only going to be difficult in a couple of days anyhow, “so what’s the use.” Always let the new you make the decision, and then you’ll be living your present moments.

You know how easy it is to give up on a resolution, and you may have attributed this to some character flaw or personality weakness. Not so! You give up on your resolutions because your mind resists the notion of trying to live your life in long stretches, when it is patently impossible to do so. It is simply a matter of asking yourself at the beginning of the day, “How do I want to conduct my life today?” Then very directly begin to carry out your goals for the day. When you get good at living your present moments one day at a time, you’ll see yourself changing right before your own surprised eyes.

Remember, anyone can do anything for just one day, so tune out the sentences that keep you locked into your old self-defeating ways and begin to enjoy each day of your bright new year.

Does this make sense? It does to me. In our industry (Network Marketing) and especially this time of the year where we have a VERY effective weight loss product it seems SETTING UNREALISTIC GOALS is the norm. Those goals could revolve around expectations with the body (Ex: lose X amount of weight) or financial goals. (Ex. this year I will earn X income).

This article was written in 2014 by John Rampton… and although many of his points are accurate today, there is a lot of talk about intermittent fasting these days and actually skipping the traditional ‘timing’ of breakfast….but NOT the nutrition.

How does THIS come into play if you decide to SKIP breakfast on one of your intermittent fasting days? I can tell you what I will do IN MY life on those days!

For me on those occasional days, I’ll simply have my nutritious BREAKFAST PROTEIN SHAKE at a later time!

First let’s see the benefits of eating breakfast, as stated below. Then we’ll offer a new ‘twist’ on the subject and share a solution that VIIVA is addressing on this very subject matter.

Chances are you’ve heard many times in your life that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And over the years, there have been countless studies attempting to prove–and even disprove–this advice, and to determine the consequences if you miss out on this meal.

So, what is the truth? Is breakfast really that important? In short (no surprise), yes it is. Should you skip breakfast? Probably not, unless (as mentioned above, you are doing intermittent fasting. In which case, simply enjoy your breakfast shake, at a later time.)

Breakfast is:

1. Good for Your Overall Health

There have been numerous studies over the years that have shown that eating breakfast frequently is beneficial for an individual’s health in several different ways. For example, Harvard conducted a 16-year study of 26,902 American men aged 45 to 82 and found that those “who skipped breakfast had a 27 percent higher risk of CHD compared with men who did not.” In other words, these men were susceptible to heart attacks because of coronary heart disease associated with bad sugar levels.

Other research has found that eating breakfast can decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes in women and reduces obesity because it limits mid-morning snacking. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you can eat an unhealthy fried dish every morning; it means that eating a well-balanced breakfast is just plain good for your health. Heck, forget well-balanced–just toss down a dish of cereal….. (NO don’t do that! Enjoy a healthy protein shake with customized nutrients instead!)

2. Improves Your Memory

Another area of research has focused on the relationship between breakfast and short-term memory. One study released in the Journal of Adolescent Health of 319 adolescents (aged 13-20 years) found that “high energy intake from breakfast had a beneficial effect on immediate recall in short-term memory evaluated on the whole sample.” (YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE THE CUSTOMIZED BREAKFAST OPTIONS BEING OFFERED BY VIIVA! Some will be designed for enhancing your memory, some for getting GREENS in your diet, some for energy, some for mood enhancement etc.)

There was also a study released in the Journal of Physiology and Behavior that discovered that eating breakfast, such as oatmeal, improved the spatial and short-term memories of elementary school children.
While these studies looked at children and teenagers respectively, it’s believed that eating breakfast can improve short-term memory in adults as well.

3. Boosts Energy

According to a 1999 study published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition, consuming a breakfast high in fiber and low in carbohydrates will make you feel less tired during the day.

When your breakfast consists of items like whole-grain breads and cereals–which should provide at least four grams of fiber per serving–you’re fueling your body for the entire morning. If you are a high caffeine user, consider getting a protein into your body at breakfast, so that your caffeine has something to bind with for maximum energy. (Make sure you avoid fast food cereals that are full of empty calories and sugar!)

4. Improves Your Mood

A 1999 study in the Journal of Physiology and Behavior of 144 volunteers found that those who had breakfast cereal prior to the test sessions arrived in a better mood and were even calmer following the sessions than those who did not. In short, having these vital nutrients every morning can help make you more positive. (New studies show that breakfasts with a protein base (whey or plant based protein powder for example) are actually healthier for you! A quick and ideal solution would be a protein base shake with healthy carbs and the ability to customize to the person’s nutritional needs. Mom’s need a different set of nutrients than children, than athletes, than seniors, etc.)

No matter what age you are, eating breakfast every morning will make you feel less restless and irritable.

5. Consumes More Nutrients

Since most of us are on the go most of the time, it can become extremely difficult to eat a well-balanced meal. However, if you have the time every morning to eat breakfast, you are probably making sure that you also have the chance to consume important nutrients. (Once again, a quick SHAKE with the ideal nutrients could be the perfect solution in our fast paced life.)

According to research published in the journal Nutrition Research and Practice, those who eat breakfast daily are consuming beneficial nutrients like calcium and fiber.

6. Helps Burn Calories

Whether you’re dieting or not, breakfast is a great way to help burn those unwanted calories. By consuming smaller meals throughout the day, you’re increasing your body’s metabolism. In fact, research conducted by Harvard of 17,000 men discovered “that those who frequently have breakfast consistently weighed less than those who rarely or never ate breakfast ” (This is being debated by new science and those in favor of a Keto lifestyle or ‘diet’ suggests that a healthy protein based ‘shake’ would actually be more useful to the body and maintaining health as well as your ideal weight, than the ‘average cereal’ being consumed today.)

7. Improves Concentration

This shouldn’t come as a surprise since breakfast has already been found to improve energy and short-term memory. Research has discovered that eating breakfast also boosts concentration. In a 2008 issue of Indian Pediatrics, it was found that “middle-school students who ate breakfast every day had better attention, concentration, memory, and school achievement than those who consumed breakfast only sometimes or never did.” During sleep, the main source of the brain’s energy, glucose, decreases, hence the help from breakfast.

Recent research explains that eating a healthy breakfast–such as eggs, oatmeal, yogurt, and fruit–keeps “blood sugar levels steady and allows optimal cognitive function throughout the day.” (Once again for a quick breakfast, a new solution for people of all ages, is a protein based shake!)

It does take a little forethought and you may have to plan three extra minutes in the morning, but if you want to improve your health, memory, mood, concentration, and energy level, start eating a healthy (or mostly healthy) breakfast every morning.

It is with great pleasure that I share Shelly Lang’s story that spans from 2006 to the present. I encourage you to read to the end to see the strength (both physical and spiritual) that Shelly endured over the 13 years of her ‘journey’. Her story is worth reading as she discovered many things about herself during this journey, but also about the power of prayer and optimum nutrition for healing her body and cells. Perhaps you can learn and discover as well.

“In her own words”…

“My Crazy medical train! Buckle up and hang on, you are in for an adventure! The fact that I am alive and well to share is a miracle in itself.

This long, lengthy journey began August 2006. Monday morning at work I was feeling extremely tired, and my body was just sore. I finished my groups (I was a counselor for the Idaho Department Of Corrections) and went home. When I called the doctor’s office, they advised me to climb in bed and get some rest and to be in the office first thing in the morning as the doctor is concerned, and she wants to check you out!

When I arrived the next morning, she examined me, then discussed since I had been diagnosed with Asthma a few years earlier, she sees a pattern with lung issues being the cause of all my office visits. She didn’t want to put me on prednisone, as she was afraid it would deplete my immune system more.

She sent me home and told me to come back in on Thursday and if I was feeling better just call and cancel the appointment. Thursday arrived and I work up extremely short of breath. When I arrived at the doctor’s office, she examined me and stated, “I hear pneumonia- you’re going to the hospital”!

This was the start of one hospital admittance to many, many more hospital stays. It became so bad I would have a bag packed in my car, when I went to see the pulmonologists. Every month I was put in the hospital for 10 days at a time. I was on major steroids and antibiotics just to breathe. I was sent to The National Jewish Respiratory Hospital for a week of testing, still no answers and came home on more medicine.

This continued until I was taking 100 milligrams of Prednisone a day. My life had become something I didn’t recognize. I was then sent to Seattle, for yet more testing on my lungs. still no game changing news!

After living on steroids for years my bones were very brittle. I am not exactly graceful either, I dropped a pan from a pan rack way up high in the kitchen. It came crashing down on my foot. I never really paid much attention to it until it began to hurt like crazy! Quick Care was open, and I went in to have my foot checked. I was excited when he said it wasn’t broke. He told me to put asper cream on it and use a heating pad. (THIS PICTURE to the left is ME back in 2008. My body was bloated from drugs and as a result I was VERY overweight.)

I was at Elk Rehab at the time working on building my lung function. I informed the doctor that I couldn’t do the tread mill, as it just killed my foot. He then sent me to Orthopedics. They x-rayed it, and it was broke! I had walked on it for six months, after being told it wasn’t broke. Surgery is my next step. He had to go in and break my foot, take a bone out of my knee and insert it in my foot, holding it together with a screw.

When we arrived the man at the desk said “just go on back, we will collect paper work later.” I should have picked up on that clue! Like “oh man, I must look awful, what hospital lets you go on in without paper work- really”? The doctor decided to do an Ultra Sound and he found a mass by my Pancreas. Doctors did not know what it was, but after biopsy’s, many tests and consults with many specialists the decision was made to do surgery.

The surgeon said he would do laparoscopic, and I would have to spend the night! I was not happy about spending the night as I had already spent a ton of time in the hospital. He informed me that he understood, however he would be moving my organs around and I would need to be observed.

When I woke up, he came in and said I am going to let you go home, as I couldn’t get to it. I will bring you back in and we will cut you open and get it. Still I had no idea what I was looking at. I was home for about an hour when the doctor called, he told me to go to the drug store and buy this prep, do it and be at the hospital Monday morning at 5 am as we are operating at 7am. REALLY?????

Since it was already Thursday, I had to get with it. I was prepped, ready and on time at the hospital on Monday. Waking up was a nightmare post-surgery as I was cut from stern to stem so to speak, and I had a feeding tube in. They took part of my colon, part of my small intestine, and 18 lymph nodes. The doctor came in and ask how I was doing? I responded with “I feel like I did 100 sit ups, and I wasn’t in shape to start with.”

He said “Oh yeah, let me tell you what I did. I took all your organs out and cut out what I could see. Then ran each of your organs thru my fingers to make sure I got it all.”

He comes in on Friday, and says he received the Pathology report and it showed disease in a few areas, but we got it!” He turned and left. I was on major pain meds, so I wasn’t thinking anything about what he said. A couple hours later a man came to my hospital room, who turns out to be the oncologist.

This is when I heard the words that no one wants to ever hear. You have Cancer! It is a rare form, you will be sick of me by the time this is over. I looked at him and said “Not me- you better go check your file and go talk to who you are looking for?” No denial there. I then looked at the Oncologist, and I burst into to tears and I said, “It can’t be me…. my first grand-baby will be due August 2nd.”

After that I collected my thoughts and said I am going to see that baby be born. What do we need to do? This was June 25th. 2009. He was born July 24th. Then my incision was infected, and my leg in a cast, I didn’t look too pretty but he could not see me, but I could see him! AHHH the LOVE of a grandmother!

Good news is, this type of cancer also presents like asthma in some ways. The wheezing and shortness of breath are the same along with other added symptoms like diarrhea and flushing. Now we have information, and I won’t be going out of state to see yet another specialist. All the testing will finally stop, I thought!

I was released on Sunday afternoon, only to find out I had to be back downtown Monday morning for a three-day scan. Luckily the department called and said not to come until Tuesday, because they had to have the radioactive dye flown in to do the test. Well that doesn’t make you feel real at ease! These scans are right up to your nose close, and they scan over the course of three days.

About 6 weeks after my surgery I was struggling with being the middle man for all I ate. Food went right on out! I called The Oncologist and asked what I needed to do to alleviate these symptoms. He had me come in and do blood work which takes a week to get back! I was scheduled to see him after the week, and when I showed up, he showed me that my proteins had gone way up. I needed to begin with these shots of Sandostatin to keep the Cancer at bay. I started on these shots and have been on them for 9 plus years.

They were 15-gauge needles and they had to go in an inch and a half on both sides of my bum! This treatment went on for nine plus years every 28 days. (Incidentally, the cost for my treatment was $16,000 every 28 days!) do you get it?

Sometimes they would hit my sciatic nerve, talk about painful. Oh, my heck, down both sides of your legs it is excruciating pain! I was sick more times than I can count during this time. Let alone we winter in Arizona and I was flying to Idaho every 28 days for treatment.

FLASH FORWARD…

I had pneumonia when we first got to Arizona and it hadn’t cleared up and I got that flu. One spring weekend in March of 2018 we stopped to visit Travis and Coliese Hart. (yes, this is Coliese and Travis).

Coliese and Travis put me on Amazon gold (it was a different name then) and I started taking it. We have grand kids who go to school and daycare. When I would go there, I was always sick for weeks after. Being on Amazon Gold has been a game changer for me. I feel amazing, I went on a cruise, (something I would have never done before Gold!) and many people traveling with us got sick. My hubby got very sick with a bad cold deep in his burning chest. While researching a way to BOOST the metabolism and taking charge of your health and metabolism I stumbled upon many different thoughts on Boosting the Metabolism and thought I’d also share what I discovered back in December 2016. It’s called TRIM.

Do you ever wonder how your friend can eat whatever she wants and not gain a pound, while you seem to gain weight by simply looking at food? The answer is in your metabolism—the way your body burns up all the calories from food.

Some people have a fast metabolism which helps keep weight off, and others have a slow metabolism, putting on weight very quickly. The good news is metabolic rate can be altered, and even sped up. A product called TRIM helps you take charge of your metabolism, so you too can indulge without the bulge!

What is TRIM?

What is Metabolism?

Metabolism is the rate at which your body’s internal engine operates as it performs its bodily functions. Amount of lean muscle: Muscle burns calories faster than fat. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even at rest. (This is why I highly recommend everyone- yes WOMEN of all ages, do weight resistant training or exercises….to build valuable lean muscle!)

Sex differences: Males generally have a 10 to 15% faster BMR than females because the male body has a larger percentage of lean muscle tissue.

Age: Younger people have faster metabolisms due to increased activity of cells.

Other components of your metabolism include physical activity, which accounts for about 20% of calories burned, and dietary thermogenesis, which is the number of calories required for digesting and processing the food you eat. This accounts for the remaining 10% of energy needs.

How Does This Affect My Weight?
Simply put, your metabolism affects weight management because it determines how many calories you need per day. If you have a high BMR (fast metabolism) it takes a lot of calories for your body to function; eating calorie-laden foods may not pack on the pounds for you. On the other hand, if you have a low BMR (slow metabolism), your body needs fewer calories to function. Unfortunately, for your sluggish metabolism, eating calorie-laden foods will result in weight gain.

How Can I Jump Start my Body’s Metabolic Engine?
Follow these tips to naturally boost your metabolism:

Eat Breakfast. Breakfast is truly the most important meal of the day, especially for you weight loss seekers. Research shows that those who eat breakfast lose more weight than those who skip breakfast. Your metabolism slows down while you sleep and it doesn’t speed back up until you eat again. If you don’t eat until lunchtime, your body won’t burn as many calories as it could during the morning period. Kick start your day with a balanced breakfast. Eat smaller meals throughout the day. Eating five or six smaller meals rather than three large meals helps to keep your metabolism revved up! It also helps to fill you up over the course of the day, making a binge session less likely.

Don’t starve yourself. Fasting, cutting calories and skipping meals will all help put weight ON not OFF. Your body needs a certain number of calories to function. If you don’t meet this need, your body will switch into survival mode, slow down the metabolism and promote the storage of energy (calories) in the form of fat to protect itself from starvation.

Side note here: When consuming the TRIM you will not want to eat as much food or perhaps not want to eat at all….still, you must remember to eat as the KEEP your metabolism that you sped up with TRIM, in high gear. Not eating enough will be like having one foot on the GAS (Trim) and the other on the BRAKE. (consuming too few calories.)

Exercise. Both cardiovascular exercise and weight training help to improve metabolic rate and keep weight off. Cardiovascular exercise, such as walking, running, biking, swimming and aerobics, allows your body to burn a lot of calories at one time. Weight training will increase muscle mass, which burns more calories than body fat. Weight training also puts the metabolism into overdrive, so your burn calories for up to two hours after the workout.

Drink TRIM which has many ingredients including Green Tea extract. Research by the University of Geneva shows that green tea appears to increase metabolic rate and speed up fat oxidation. Compounds in green tea, catechin polyphenols, appear to speed up the rate at which calories are burned and therefore increase overall energy expenditure leading to weight loss!

Drink water. Not drinking enough water can slow down your metabolism. Be sure to drink at least six to eight glasses of water per day or 1/2 ounce for each pound of body weight. Adding a lemon slice to water increases the alkalinity and will also aid in flushing fat.

Energy-dense carbohydrates, such as whole grains, beans, vegetables and fruits that contain fiber to help regulate your metabolism by having less impact on insulin levels.
High quality protein, such as fish, poultry, lean meats, soy, tofu and low fat dairy products to help build metabolism-boosting muscle mass. Essential fats for good health such as olive oil, avocado and nuts.
